Growing spirulina at home

Spirulina is a cyanobacterium grown in warm, alkaline water — which is exactly why a kitchen kit can work at all: the high pH suppresses most competing organisms. A home kit is a culture starter, a growth medium, a vessel and a fine harvesting cloth. What decides success is not the brand but three variables you control daily: light, temperature and pH. This guide covers what a kit realistically produces, the running costs, and the food-safety limits worth respecting.

What to look for

Light: steady, not intense
Roughly 12–16 hours of bright indirect light or a modest LED panel. Direct summer sun overheats a small vessel and bleaches the culture; a north-facing window plus a lamp is more stable than a sunny sill.
Temperature: 30–37 °C is the productive band
Growth slows sharply below 20 °C and the culture stalls near 15 °C. An aquarium heater with a thermostat is the single upgrade that turns a seasonal experiment into a year-round culture.
pH: keep it 9.5–10.5
The alkaline medium is the culture's defence. Test strips or a cheap pH pen plus sodium bicarbonate adjustments are essential — a drifting pH is the usual reason a kit fails or grows something else.
Agitation and headroom
Stir once or twice a day, or run an air stone. Cells settle and self-shade otherwise. A wide, shallow vessel outperforms a tall narrow one at the same volume.
Harvest fraction, not everything
Take no more than a quarter to a third of the culture at a time through a 30–50 micron cloth, then top up with fresh medium. Over-harvesting collapses the density the culture needs to rebound.
Know the contamination signals
Yellowing, a foul smell, surface films or a pH crash mean stop and restart from clean starter. Home cultures are not lab-tested; discard rather than eat anything you are unsure about.

    Holding 32–35 °C roughly doubles output versus an unheated room culture.

    Watch out: Small heaters can overshoot in low volumes — pair with a thermometer.

  • 30–50 micron harvest cloth

    Best for Clean separation

    Fine enough to retain filaments, coarse enough to drain in minutes.

    Watch out: Nylon meshes stain; rinse immediately or they clog.

    Almost every failed home culture is a pH problem noticed too late.

    Watch out: Cheap strips read poorly above pH 9 — a pen is worth the upgrade.

Frequently asked questions

How much spirulina can you realistically grow at home?

A well-run 5–10 litre culture yields roughly one to two teaspoons of fresh spirulina a day once established — a supplement-scale harvest, not a food staple. Scaling up means more surface area, not a deeper tank.

Is home-grown spirulina safe to eat?

It can be, if the pH stays above 9.5, the vessel and cloth are kept clean and you eat it fresh or refrigerate it for no more than a couple of days. Home cultures are not tested for cyanotoxins or heavy metals, so discard any batch that smells wrong, changes colour or follows a pH crash.

Is growing spirulina cheaper than buying powder?

Rarely, once heating, medium salts and your time are counted. People grow it for freshness — fresh spirulina has a mild taste unlike dried powder — and for the interest, not to save money.

Does spirulina provide vitamin B12?

No. Spirulina contains pseudo-B12 analogues that are not bioactive in humans and may interfere with B12 assays. Vegans still need a reliable supplemented or fortified B12 source.

How long does a spirulina culture last?

Indefinitely, if you harvest a third at a time, top up the medium and hold the temperature and pH. Most cultures die from neglect over a cold month rather than from age.
