Desks, tags and what each one groups

This page is the full subject map of VegEco: every editorial desk we run, and every topic tag those desks have used, ranked by how much reporting sits behind them. It is the fastest way to see what the magazine actually covers rather than what it says it covers.

Desks are broad and permanent — plant-based food, farmed animals, wildlife, climate, sustainable living. Tags are narrow and emergent: they appear when a subject earns sustained coverage, and they grow as that coverage accumulates. Together they let you move from a general interest to a specific question in two clicks.

How topics are assigned

Each article is filed to exactly one desk and tagged with the subjects it genuinely addresses — typically four to eight. We do not tag for search traffic: a piece is only tagged with 'methane' if methane is discussed substantively, because a tag page that collects loosely related articles is worse than no tag page at all.

Reading the coverage bars

The bar next to each topic shows how much of our reporting concentrates there, relative to the most-covered subject in this edition. Long bars mark subjects we return to constantly, such as diet transition and factory farming. Short bars are newer or more specialised threads, and they are often where the most surprising material sits.

Coverage differs by edition

Because every language edition is written independently, the topic map is not identical across the site. The Hindi edition weights dairy and smallholder farming more heavily; the German edition carries more on agricultural policy; the Portuguese edition covers deforestation and cattle ranching in far more depth. Switching editions is a legitimate research move, not just a language change.

FAQ

Why does a topic I care about have so few articles?
Either it is new to our coverage or it is covered under a broader tag. Try the search page or the glossary for an alternative term; many subjects sit under a technical name that differs from everyday usage.
Can I follow a single topic?
Yes — open its tag page and subscribe to the edition newsletter, or bookmark the tag page itself. Tag pages are stable URLs that update automatically as new articles are filed.
Do the same tags exist in every language?
The desks do, but tags are generated by each edition's own reporting, so a subject that has produced ten articles in English may have two in Thai and none yet in Swahili.
How many topics are tracked?
The count at the top of this page is live: it reflects every tag currently used by published articles in this edition, not a fixed taxonomy we maintain in advance.
