Why are calves separated from dairy cows?
Milk sold for human consumption is milk the calf would drink, so calves are typically removed within 24–72 hours of birth. Male calves are usually raised for veal or beef, or killed shortly after birth.
How long do dairy cows live?
A cow's natural lifespan is around twenty years, but dairy cows are generally culled at four to six years when milk yield drops or they become lame or infertile.
