Bamboo socks, and how to wash them properly

Updated 11 August 2026 · VegEco editorial desk

Wash bamboo rayon socks cold or warm (up to 30 °C / 86 °F) on a gentle cycle with a mild detergent, skip fabric softener and bleach, and air-dry or tumble on low. Rayon fibres lose strength when wet, so hot washes and high-heat drying are what cause the shrinkage and pilling people blame on the socks. Bamboo is a genuinely comfortable, animal-free alternative to wool — but most bamboo fabric is chemically processed viscose, so the eco claim needs a closer look.

What to look for

Washing temperature
Cold to 30 °C. Rayon is weakest when wet, and hot water plus agitation is what breaks the fibres and shrinks the sock.
Detergent and softener
Mild liquid detergent only. Fabric softener coats the fibre and kills the moisture-wicking that made you buy bamboo; bleach destroys rayon.
Drying
Air-dry flat or tumble on low. High heat is the main cause of shrinkage and elastic failure at the cuff.
Check the blend
Good bamboo socks are typically 70–80% bamboo viscose with nylon and elastane for durability and shape. 100% bamboo socks wear through fast.
Know what 'bamboo' means
Nearly all bamboo fabric is viscose made by dissolving the plant in chemical solvents. Closed-loop lyocell processing (bamboo lyocell) recovers the solvents and is the more defensible option.

Choosing the right pair

  • Everyday bamboo viscose blend

Best for Office and daily wear

Soft, breathable, good moisture handling, thermoregulating in both directions.

Watch out: Needs the nylon content to survive; pure bamboo wears thin at the heel.

  • Bamboo lyocell

Best for The most defensible sustainability choice

Closed-loop solvent recovery avoids the worst of the viscose chemistry.

Watch out: Less common and more expensive.

  • Cushioned bamboo sports sock

    Best for Walking and gym

Wicks better than cotton, so fewer blisters over long distances.

Watch out: Slower to dry than synthetics for multi-day hiking.

  • Organic cotton socks

Best for Simple, robust, widely available

Durable and easy to wash hot when you need to.

Watch out: Holds moisture — the classic cause of damp feet and blisters.

  • Recycled polyester or nylon

Best for Sport and wet conditions

Fastest drying, most durable, uses reclaimed material.

Watch out: Sheds microplastics — wash in a filter bag.

  • Seamless-toe versions

Best for Sensitive feet and diabetes

Removes the toe seam that causes most rubbing and pressure points.

Watch out: Check the cuff is non-binding as well as the toe.

Frequently asked questions

How do you wash bamboo rayon socks?

Cold or up to 30 °C on a gentle cycle, mild detergent, no bleach and no fabric softener. Air-dry or tumble on low. Turning them inside out reduces pilling.

Do bamboo socks shrink?

They can, mainly from hot washing and high-heat drying. Washed cold and dried low, a good blend holds its shape for years.

Are bamboo socks actually sustainable?

The plant grows fast with little water or pesticide, but conventional bamboo viscose uses harsh solvents. Closed-loop bamboo lyocell is the version with a credible environmental case.

Are bamboo socks better than cotton?

For moisture handling and softness, generally yes. Cotton is more robust to hot washing and usually cheaper.
