Free-range eggs vs cage eggs
Free-range is the most successful welfare label in the food system, and also the most misunderstood. The difference from caged production is real, but it is narrower than the packaging implies, and two of the hardest parts of egg production are identical in both systems.

- Pasture-raised and organic standards with small flock sizes rank above standard free-range, and in-ovo sexing schemes remove chick culling. None of them remove slaughter at end of lay.
