How much water does it take to produce a kilo of beef?

Around 15,000 litres in total water footprint, the vast majority of it rainfall absorbed by feed crops; legumes sit near 4,000 litres and vegetables far lower still.

Why is land use such an important metric?

Land used for grazing and feed cannot store carbon as forest or support wildlife, so the opportunity cost of that land is one of the largest hidden climate costs of animal products.
